On 20 and 21 September 2014, during the 69th United Nations General Assembly, the Global Alliance of Mayors and Leaders from Africa and of African Descent held its second meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Global Alliance serves as a coordinating body which works to focus the efforts of leaders at all levels of government, intergovernmental organizations, and the public and private sectors, towards improving the situation of people from Africa and of African descent. The pillars of the Global Alliance, as articulated in its founding document, the Cali and Cartagena Declaration and Plan of Action for Africans and People of African Descent, include social inclusion, the empowerment of girls and women, health, economic growth and education.
The African Renaissance and Diaspora Network serves as secretariat for the Global Alliance.
